Prince Louis Napoléon, the Prince Imperial, was the only legitimate son of Napoleon III, the last Emperor of the French, and his second wife, Empress Eugénie. Born in 1856, Louis was named after his grandfather, the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte, and was raised with the expectation of one day inheriting the imperial throne. This striking carte-de-visite (CDV) captures a young and handsome Prince Louis Napoléon in profile, likely taken around 1879 when he was in his early twenties. Dressed in a formal suit and wearing a neatly trimmed beard, the Prince exudes an air of confidence and regality. His piercing blue eyes gaze intently out at the viewer, hinting at the strong will and determination that would come to define his short but eventful life. Despite his royal lineage, Louis's upbringing was far from typical. He was educated in France and Germany, and spent much of his youth traveling throughout Europe and the Middle East. In 1874, at the age of eighteen, he embarked on a military expedition to Africa to quell a rebellion in Algeria. Tragically, the young prince was killed in battle just a few months later, on February 1, 1879, at the age of twenty-three. The loss of the Prince Imperial was a profound blow to the French people, who had hoped that he would one day succeed his grandfather as Emperor. His death marked the end of the Bonaparte dynasty and the beginning of a new era in French history. This poignant CDV serves as a reminder of the young man who might have been, and the legacy of the Napoleonic empire that he never had the chance to inherit.
