EDITORS COMMENTS
This cabinet card depicts Prince Louis Napoléon, also known as Napoléon Eugène Louis Bonaparte (1856-1879), as a young boy in the late 19th century. Born in the Palace of Fontainebleau, France, on March 16, 1856, he was the only legitimate son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie. At the time this photograph was taken, around 1879, Louis Napoléon was just 23 years old and had recently assumed the title of Prince Imperial following the abdication of his father in 1870. The young prince was known for his striking resemblance to his famous ancestor, Napoleon Bonaparte, and was often referred to as the 'Prince Napoleon.' Despite his youth, Louis Napoléon was determined to forge his own path and make a name for himself in the world. In 1874, he married Princess Clotilde of Savoy, a union that was intended to strengthen diplomatic relations between France and Italy. The couple had three children together. Tragically, Louis Napoléon's life was cut short when he was killed in action during the Zulu War in South Africa on February 1, 1879. The young prince had joined the French army as a colonel and was leading a charge against the Zulu forces when he was struck down. His death was a profound loss for the French people, who mourned the loss of their potential future ruler. This evocative photograph captures the young prince in a moment of innocence and vulnerability, offering a glimpse into the life of a man who was destined for greatness but whose story was cut short by fate. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of the Bonaparte dynasty and the enduring legacy of the Napoleonic era.
