EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts Louis De Berquin (1489-1529), a prominent French Protestant reformer and martyr. De Berquin was born in Bordeaux, France, during a time when the Catholic Church held significant power and influence over the country's religious and political landscape. Despite the risks, De Berquin became an ardent advocate for Protestantism, translating and disseminating Protestant texts in defiance of the Church's prohibitions. In 1529, De Berquin was arrested and brought before the Inquisition in Paris for heresy. Despite being tortured and offered leniency if he recanted, De Berquin remained steadfast in his beliefs, refusing to renounce his faith. He was subsequently sentenced to be burned at the stake in Place Maubert in Paris on May 24, 1529. This haunting image captures the moment of De Berquin's martyrdom, with the flames of the pyre consuming the wooden stake around which he stands, his expression one of calm determination and unwavering faith. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and conviction of early Protestant reformers, who faced persecution and death for their beliefs in the face of overwhelming opposition. Louis De Berquin's legacy as a martyr and champion of religious freedom continues to inspire generations, and his story remains an important chapter in the history of Protestantism and the broader history of religious dissent in Europe.
