Bleriot had made headlines by becoming the first person to cross the English Channel in an aircraft, a feat that earned him instant fame and a £1,000 prize offered by Lord Northcliffe's Daily Mail newspaper. The image captures the moment of triumph as Bleriot sits amongst an esteemed group, including Lord Northcliffe (second from left), who had sponsored the daring challenge.
