EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 18th century print captures the enigmatic figure of Lorenza Feliciana, better known as Seraphina, the Italian adventuress who became the companion and associate of the famous alchemist and self-proclaimed magus, Giuseppe Balsamo, also known as Cagliostro. The image, which dates from the late 18th century, depicts Lorenza in an elegant yet mysterious pose, with her piercing gaze fixed on the viewer. Her flowing robes and elaborate headdress suggest a connection to the occult and the paranormal, which were central to the legend of Cagliostro and his followers. Born in Palermo, Sicily, in 1740, Lorenza was said to have been a gifted clairvoyant and healer. She met Cagliostro in the late 1760s, and the two quickly became a formidable team. Together, they traveled throughout Europe, performing magical rituals, selling elixirs, and offering fortune-telling services to the wealthy and the curious. Their performances were often accompanied by elaborate theatrics, including the use of exotic animals and elaborate costumes. Despite their popularity, Cagliostro and Lorenza were also the subject of much controversy and suspicion. They were accused of being charlatans and frauds, and their activities were closely monitored by the authorities. In 1789, they were arrested in Paris and charged with various crimes, including fraud and blasphemy. Cagliostro was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment, while Lorenza was released after a short time in custody. Despite the controversies that surrounded them, Cagliostro and Lorenza remain an intriguing and enigmatic figure in the annals of 18th century European history. This print, with its haunting image of Lorenza, serves as a reminder of their enduring legacy as adventurers, magicians, and mystics.
