EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914), a renowned British soldier who made his mark in India, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Roberts is depicted here in his full military regalia, complete with a cap adorned with the insignia of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment. The distinctive whiskers and blue uniform further add to his imposing presence. Born in India, Roberts joined the British Army in 1848 and served in various campaigns in India, including the Second Anglo-Sikh War and the Indian Mutiny. In 1879, he led the British forces to a decisive victory in the Second Afghan War, earning the moniker "The Great Marquess of the Frontier." In 1880, Roberts was appointed Commander-in-Chief, India, and later served as the Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1880 to 1884. During his time in India, he implemented various military and administrative reforms that strengthened the British Raj. Roberts' military career culminated in the Second Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa, where he led the British forces to victory. He was granted the title "Earl Roberts" in the peerage in 1896 in recognition of his achievements. This photograph, taken likely around the time of the Vfair in 1880, offers a glimpse into the life of a military legend who played a significant role in shaping British colonial history. Roberts' legacy continues to be celebrated in military circles and in the annals of history.
