EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Lord Pentland, Henry John Sinclair (1925-1984), the second and last Baron Pentland, exchanges vows with his bride, Miss Lucy Babington Smith, at Eton College Chapel in September 1941. Lord Pentland, a scion of the noble Sinclair family, is seen wearing the traditional Scottish tartan kilt, adding an air of grandeur to the occasion. His bride, Lucy Babington Smith, is elegantly dressed in a white wedding gown, with a veil covering her face until the moment of the vows. Lord Pentland's marriage to Lucy, who was the niece of the Earl of Elgin, marked the beginning of a significant chapter in his life. However, little did the guests at the wedding know that this marriage would lead Lord Pentland to an extraordinary journey that would take him across continents and change the course of his life. After the wedding, Lord Pentland became increasingly interested in the teachings of the mystic and spiritual leader, G.I. Gurdjieff. In 1953, he was appointed as the first president of the American Gurdjieff Foundation, a position he held until his death in 1984. This appointment marked the beginning of Lord Pentland's deep involvement in the Gurdjieff movement, which aimed to promote self-awareness and personal transformation through spiritual practices and community living. This photograph captures a moment of joy and celebration, but it also serves as a reminder of the unexpected twists and turns that life can take. Lord Pentland's marriage to Lucy Babington Smith was not just the beginning of a personal union but also the catalyst for a lifelong commitment to spiritual exploration and the spread of Gurdjieff's teachings in the West.
