This Carte-de-Visite (CDV) photograph captures Lord John Russell, 1st Earl Russell, in a thoughtful and introspective pose. Born on November 25, 1792, Russell was a prominent British Liberal statesman who served as Prime Minister twice, from 1846 to 1852 and from 1865 to 1866. He is best known for his role in the passage of the Reform Act 1832, which expanded the electorate and reformed the representation of the people in Parliament. Russell's political career began in earnest in 1813 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Tavistock. Over the next several decades, he held various positions in the government, including Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary. In 1847, he was created Earl Russell in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This photograph, taken in 1878, shows Russell in his later years, with a distinguished white beard and a serious expression. The signature below the image attests to its authenticity, adding to its historical significance.
