EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Henry Stewart, 1st Earl of Bothwell and 5th Earl of Orkney, better known as Henry, Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots. Born in Scotland in 1545, Darnley was the son of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox, and Margaret Douglas, making him a first cousin of Mary. The image captures Lord Darnley in a profile view, wearing the fashionable attire of the time, including a ruff collar and a feathered hat, known as a medallion, which was a symbol of nobility. The intricate detail of the hat's feathers and the delicate folds of his doublet demonstrate the high-quality craftsmanship of the portrait. Lord Darnley's marriage to Mary in 1565 was a politically motivated union aimed at strengthening the Scottish monarchy. However, their relationship was fraught with turmoil, and in 1567, Darnley was implicated in the murder of Mary's second husband, Lord Bothwell, who was also a Scottish nobleman. Darnley himself was later killed in an explosion at Kirk o' Field in Edinburgh in 1567. Despite the tragic end to his life, Lord Darnley's legacy is significant. He was the father of James I of England, who succeeded Elizabeth I in 1603 and became the first monarch of the united kingdoms of England and Scotland. This portrait serves as a reminder of the complex web of Scottish and English royal history, and the intrigue and drama that surrounded the lives of the monarchs of the time.
