EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, an American literary giant, in his later years. Born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine, Longfellow is best known for his epic poem "Hiawatha," which brought Native American folklore to a wider audience. His poetic masterpiece, "The Song of Hiawatha," was first published in 1855, and its enduring popularity has cemented Longfellow's place in American literary history. The photograph, taken in 1882, reveals the wisdom and depth of Longfellow's character. His piercing gaze and expressive eyes reflect the profound thoughts and emotions that fueled his creative genius. The poet's white beard and receding hairline add to the sense of age and experience. Longfellow's literary contributions extend far beyond "Hiawatha." He is also famous for his poem "The Wakefield Miracle," which tells the story of a miracle that occurred in the English town of Wakefield during the Middle Ages. Another of his most beloved works is "Paul Revere's Ride," which immortalizes the heroic actions of the famous American patriot. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Longfellow faced personal tragedies throughout his life. His first wife, Nancy Appleton, died in a fire in their home in 1835, leaving him devastated. He later married Fanny Appleton, his dead wife's sister, in 1836. Their marriage was also marked by tragedy when Fanny was seriously injured in an accident in 1861, leaving Longfellow to care for her until her death in 1865. This poignant photograph of Longfellow in his later years serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of the human experience and the enduring power of the written word.
