Longchamp arrests Hugh de Puiset

William Longchamp, Bishop of Ely, arrests Hugh de Puiset (Hugh Pudsey) at Tickhill Castle. Longchamp, a favourite of Richard I, had been given authority to govern England while the King was away on the Third Crusade. Following complaints from de Puiset, the Bishop of Durham, he was given authority over the country north of the Humber River. This did not go down well with Longchamp who outmanoeuvred his rival. Following the arrest, de Puiset was forced to surrender his power and the castles in his possession. Date: 1190

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of medieval English history, Bishop William Longchamp of Ely (1154-1226) is depicted in the act of arresting Hugh de Puiset (d. 1195), the Bishop of Durham, at Tickhill Castle in 1190. Longchamp, a favorite of King Richard I, or "Lionheart," had been granted authority to govern England while the monarch was away on the Third Crusade. However, following complaints from Bishop Puiset, Longchamp was given jurisdiction over the northern part of the country north of the Humber River. This appointment did not sit well with Longchamp, who outmaneuvered his rival in a power struggle that culminated in this dramatic arrest. The scene is filled with tension and intrigue. Longchamp, dressed in his episcopal robes and holding a cross, stands resolute and determined as he confronts Puiset, who is shown in the act of surrendering, with his hands raised in submission. The castle looms ominously in the background, a symbol of the political turmoil that was gripping England at the time. Longchamp's arrest of Puiset marked the end of the latter's power and the seizure of his castles. It was a significant moment in the history of the English Church and the struggle for power among the bishops and secular rulers of the time. The image serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape of medieval England and the role that religion and power played in shaping the country's history. The date of this image is 1190, and it is a testament to the rich and complex history of the medieval period in England. The image is not to be used for commercial purposes and is available through Mary Evans Prints Online.
