EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heroic efforts of 250 firemen as they valiantly fought a devastating blaze in the vibrant West End of London. The inferno engulfed the building of the renowned Gramophone Company, known for manufacturing His Masters Voice gramophones, radios, and electrical appliances on Oxford Street. Tragically, amidst the chaos, Sgt William Glover Travis, a brave watchman aged 48, lost his life while attempting to raise the alarm. The flames were fueled by thousands of precious gramophone records, creating an intense and challenging battle for firefighters. The gravity of this situation was evident as traffic was diverted from one of London's busiest streets to facilitate firefighting operations. In their relentless efforts to combat the raging fire, firemen utilized a massive canvas tank specifically designed for air raid precaution measures. This ingenious solution provided additional pressure for their hoses. In this poignant image captured on December 27th, 1937 - between two world wars - we witness a battery of hoses being directed towards the burning structure. The monochrome composition adds depth and intensity to this historic moment frozen in time. This photograph is a powerful reminder not only of human resilience but also serves as a testament to those who risked their lives selflessly protecting others during times of great peril.
