EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken in July 1964, showcases the iconic Pier Head area of Liverpool, as seen from above. The image reveals the Princes Dock and Princes Landing Stage, which once played a significant role in Liverpool's maritime history. Adjoining Princes Parade, this landing stage was a vital component of the transatlantic liner service before its decommissioning in 1973. Beyond the dock, the Three Graces – the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building – gracefully rise, their architectural grandeur echoing the city's rich maritime heritage. The Georges Landing Stage, which remains in use today by the Mersey Ferry, can also be seen in the foreground. This photograph holds a special significance as it was taken in the same year that Gerry and The Pacemakers released their hit single "Ferry Cross the Mersey." The lyrics of this iconic song resonate with the image, painting a vivid picture of the bustling waterfront and the ferries that once carried passengers across the River Mersey. The black-and-white image, captured by Aerofilms, offers a unique perspective of Liverpool's urban landscape in the 1960s, showcasing the city's maritime past and its enduring connection to the water. This photograph is a testament to the ever-evolving story of Liverpool and its relationship with the River Mersey.
