EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Portraits of seven bishops of England Bending but not breaking Flectimur sed non frangimur" showcases a significant moment in history. In 1688, King James II placed these prominent figures in the Tower of London due to their open defiance against his Declaration of Indulgence. The central oval portrait features Archbishop William of Canterbury, surrounded by ovals containing the portraits of William or St. Asaph, John or Chichester, Thomas or Peterborow, Jonathan or Bristol, Thomas of Bath and Wells, and Francis or Ely. Above each bishop's portrait lies a depiction of their respective mitered throat symbolizing their ecclesiastical authority. At the topmost part rests an enchanting cherub while at the bottom resides a four-line text written in Dutch and French. Two medallions are positioned between these languages; one showcasing an image of the Tower itself and another displaying scales with a sun and moon insignia representing balance. This exquisite engraving on paper measures approximately 442 mm in height and 288 mm in width. Created by Adriaen Haelwegh sometime between 1688-1712, it is now preserved within the Liszt Collection for all to appreciate its historical significance. This artwork serves as a reminder that even when faced with adversity and confinement, these seven bishops remained steadfast in their beliefs without succumbing to pressure – bending but never breaking under duress from those who sought to suppress them.
