Parus Xanthogenys, Parus Monticolus. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving

Parus Xanthogenys, Parus Monticolus. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of two bird species from the Himalaya Mountains, Parus Xanthogenys and Parus Monticolus. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork is a testament to their passion for ornithology. John Gould, known as the "bird-stuffer" by the Zoological Society due to his expertise in taxidermy, became fascinated with birds from the east after a collection arrived at the society's museum in the late 1820s. Driven by his fascination, John conceived an ambitious project - publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing these illustrations to life through her remarkable drawings transferred onto large lithographic stones. The resulting plates, now famously referred to as "Gould plates" are not only visually stunning but also serve as valuable records of Asian avian diversity during that era. This particular engraving captures every intricate detail of these exotic birds' plumage and tail feathers, showcasing their vibrant colors against a carefully chosen background. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration represents both British and European artistic talent within natural history studies. The Liszt Cultural Institute has preserved this piece meticulously, allowing us to appreciate its historical significance today. It serves as a reminder of our ongoing fascination with nature's wonders and our continuous efforts to document and understand animal behavior through artistry like that exhibited by Quint Lox.
