John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Nucifraga Hemispila, commonly known as the Himalayan Nutcracker. The image is an engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, renowned for their contributions to ornithology. John Gould's fascination with birds from the East began when a collection of avian specimens arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these majestic creatures, he conceived the idea of publishing a volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty species found in the Himalayan mountains. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. She meticulously created stunning drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones, resulting in what are now famously referred to as "Gould plates". These plates showcased not only accurate depictions of each bird but also captured their vibrant colors and intricate details. The Nucifraga Hemispila depicted here stands out with its exotic appearance and striking tail feathers. This Asian bird exhibits unique markings that add to its allure. The close-up view allows us to appreciate every nuance of color and pattern on its plumage. This remarkable illustration transports us back to early 19th-century natural history studies, where British artists like John and Elizabeth Gould made significant contributions through their meticulous observations and artistic talents. Today, this print serves as a testament to their legacy as well as an exquisite piece of art capturing nature's wonders for all enthusiasts to admire.
