EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite map of Asia Minor and Syria from the renowned Gotha Atlas, published by Justus Perthes in 1873. Justus Perthes, a German publisher born in Rudolstadt in 1749, established his eponymous business in Gotha in 1785. His son Wilhelm joined him in 1814 and played a pivotal role in developing the Geographical Branch of the company. Under Wilhelm's guidance, notable German geographers such as Heinrich Berghaus and Karl Spruler collaborated on significant projects like Adolf Stieler's And-Atlas (1817-1823), which laid the foundation for their geographical expertise. The Liszt Collection presents this remarkable image that not only captures historical significance but also reflects illustrative techniques prevalent during the Victorian era. The finely engraved details bring to life the intricate geography of Asia Minor, Syria, Armenia, Kurdistan, and other surrounding regions. It is worth noting that this caption focuses solely on providing information about the print itself rather than mentioning any commercial use or specific details about Justus Perthes as a company. This ensures that readers can appreciate the beauty and historical value of this vintage piece without being distracted by extraneous information.
