EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection transports us to a serene garden oasis. In the foreground, a mischievous putto delicately places a worm on a hook, preparing for an afternoon of angling in the garden pond. Nearby, another putto eagerly fishes in anticipation of catching his own prize. As our gaze moves towards the background, we discover that one lucky fish has already fallen victim to their clever tactics. The scene is filled with symbolism and hidden meanings: on the left side stands a vase atop a pedestal adorned with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, while Fraud personified lurks nearby. On the right side, another vase depicts Judas' infamous kiss as Deception takes its place on the pedestal. Intriguingly, further back in this idyllic setting stands a monument depicting Jewish Exile amidst fluttering cupids known as amores, amoretti, and putti. This juxtaposition adds depth and complexity to an already rich composition. Created by Jan Goeree in 1723 through paper engraving techniques, this remarkable artwork measures 168 mm wide by 120 mm high. Its intricate details invite contemplation and reflection on themes such as deceitfulness (Mendacity) and historical events like Babylonian Captivity. The Liszt Collection offers us an opportunity to delve into history through visual storytelling; it encourages us to explore not only what meets our eyes but also what lies beneath the surface of each masterpiece they present.
