EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the masterpiece "El Greco Domenikos Theotokopoulos Apparition". Painted by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) between 1605 and 1610, this oil on canvas depicts a profound moment of spiritual revelation. In the painting, Saint Hyacinth, a Polish Dominican priest born in 1185, is believed to have experienced an apparition of the Virgin and Child on the feast day of her assumption into heaven. The composition exudes an ethereal ambiance as a burst of light and cloud envelops the mystical vision before Saint Hyacinth's enraptured gaze. With one hand dramatically clasped to his chest, he extends his other hand towards us viewers, seemingly inviting us to partake in this divine encounter. El Greco's artistic genius shines through in every brushstroke, capturing both the intensity of Saint Hyacinth's experience and the transcendental nature of this spiritual event. The artist painted this canvas at a time when Pope Clement VIII had recently canonized Hyacinth as a saint. Measuring at approximately 62 3/8 x 38 7/8 inches (158.4 x 98.7 cm), this print allows us to appreciate El Greco's mastery from up close. It serves as a testament to his ability to convey profound religious experiences through art and invites contemplation on faith and spirituality for all who behold it.
