Dutch Ships Calm Calm Sea six warships wide calm sea
Dutch Ships in a Calm, Dutch Ships in a Calm Sea, There are six warships on a wide calm sea. The sails are hoisted, the anchors lifted. The mirror of the ship on the right in the foreground is decorated with the coat of arms of Amsterdam, held up by two standing lions. This is probably a part of a war fleet that is getting ready for departure. A sloop with elegant figures, probably from the Admiralty, sails under trumpets and salute shots along the ships, while a little further on the last provisions and crew are still taken on board. The enormous accuracy in the display of details is striking: rigging, sails and cannons, sailing ship, sailing boat, sea (seascape), flag, colors (as symbol of the state, etc.), Willem van de Velde (II), Netherlands, c. 1665, oil paint (paint), canvas, painting, h 86.8 cm × w 120 cm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a serene scene of "Dutch Ships in a Calm Sea". The composition features six majestic warships gracefully gliding across the wide expanse of tranquil waters. With their sails hoisted and anchors lifted, these vessels are preparing for an imminent departure, likely as part of a formidable war fleet. In the foreground, attention is drawn to the mirror image of the ship on the right. Adorned with the coat of arms of Amsterdam and held up by two regal lions, it proudly represents its Dutch origins. A sloop carrying elegant figures, possibly from the Admiralty, sails alongside trumpets blaring and salute shots fired in honor. Further along, we witness crew members loading provisions onto one of the ships while others eagerly board to join their comrades at sea. What truly sets this artwork apart is its remarkable attention to detail; every aspect has been meticulously captured - from rigging and sails to cannons and colors representing state symbols. Painted by Willem van de Velde II around 1665 using oil paint on canvas, this masterpiece beautifully captures both tranquility and anticipation within its frame measuring 86.8 cm in height and 120 cm in width.
