EDITORS COMMENTS
Lions and Lines: A Historical Interruption in the Construction of the Uganda Railway, 1913 This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the construction of the Uganda Railway in 1913, when the relentless progress of transport infrastructure was brought to a sudden halt by the unyielding forces of nature. The Uganda Railway, also known as the Lunatic Express, was a British colonial project to connect the port of Mombasa in Kenya with Lake Victoria in Uganda, a distance of approximately 1,676 kilometers. The image portrays a group of workers and their camp, surrounded by the raw, untamed African savannah. The men, dressed in their uniforms, appear tense and alert, their gazes fixed on the distant horizon. The reason for their vigilance becomes apparent as a pride of lions, their manes ruffled by the wind, approach the camp. The lions' intent is clear, and the men are left with no choice but to abandon their work and retreat to safety. The attack by lions was just one of many challenges faced during the construction of the Uganda Railway. The harsh terrain, extreme weather conditions, and disease outbreaks made the project a daunting undertaking. However, the relentless determination of the British colonial administration, coupled with the labor of thousands of African workers, eventually led to the completion of the railway in 1926. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and perseverance required to build transport infrastructure in Africa during the colonial era. The lions, symbolizing the natural world's resilience, stand in stark contrast to the human endeavor to tame and control the landscape. The abandoned camp and the approaching lions evoke a sense of awe and respect for the power of nature and the indomitable spirit of those who dared to build the Uganda Railway.
