EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of Lieutenant General Sir Edwin Alfred Harvey Alderson (1859-1927), a prominent British army officer who played a pivotal role in several significant campaigns throughout his distinguished military career. Born in 1859, Alderson rose through the ranks to become a senior commander, serving in conflicts such as the Second Boer War and the Balkan Wars. However, Alderson's most notable tenure came during the first half of World War One, when he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. His leadership during this period was marked by controversy and disaster. Alderson clashed with Canadian political and military elites, who felt that he underestimated the capabilities of the Canadian soldiers and disregarded their concerns. Despite these tensions, Alderson pressed ahead with operations in 1915, which resulted in heavy casualties for the Canadian forces. The most notable of these engagements was the Second Battle of Ypres, during which the Germans introduced poison gas into the battlefield, causing widespread panic and confusion among the Canadian troops. Despite the setbacks, Alderson remained committed to his command, believing that the Canadian forces could still make a significant contribution to the war effort. However, his leadership style and decisions continued to be a source of controversy, and he was eventually replaced in 1916. Alderson's legacy remains a subject of debate in military history, with some arguing that he was a competent commander who was undermined by political and personal factors, while others criticize his handling of the Canadian forces during the early years of the war. This photograph, taken in 1927, captures the image of a man who, whether admired or criticized, left an indelible mark on the history of the British and Canadian armies.
