Born in 1888, Holbrook became the first submariner in history to receive this esteemed honor. Holbrook's heroic actions took place during World War I, when he commanded the submarine HMS E12. On the night of October 26, 1914, Holbrook and his crew successfully attacked and sank the German cruiser SMS Magdeburg in the North Sea, despite facing heavy enemy fire. The Magdeburg was a formidable warship, and the attack required great skill, courage, and determination from Holbrook and his crew. The photograph, taken in 1917, shows Holbrook in his full uniform, adorned with the coveted VC insignia on his chest.
