This striking photograph captures the stoic and resolute visage of Lieut. Commander Norman Douglas Holbrook VC, a brave and distinguished Royal Navy officer who achieved the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be bestowed upon British and Commonwealth forces - the Victoria Cross (VC). Born in 1888, Holbrook became the first submariner in history to receive this esteemed honor. Holbrook's heroic actions took place during World War I, when he commanded the submarine HMS E12. On the night of October 26, 1914, Holbrook and his crew successfully attacked and sank the German cruiser SMS Magdeburg in the North Sea, despite facing heavy enemy fire. The Magdeburg was a formidable warship, and the attack required great skill, courage, and determination from Holbrook and his crew. The photograph, taken in 1917, shows Holbrook in his full uniform, adorned with the coveted VC insignia on his chest. His unwavering gaze and stern expression convey a sense of unyielding resolve and unwavering commitment to duty. The image is a testament to Holbrook's bravery, leadership, and historical significance as the first submariner to receive the Victoria Cross.
