This striking photograph captures the stern gaze of Admiral Sir Max Kennedy Horton, GCB, DSO (1883-1951), a renowned British naval officer who made significant contributions to the British Navy during both World War I and World War II. Horton began his naval career as a submariner, serving in the First World War and commanding the submarine HMS E12. His bravery and successes in the submarine service earned him the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). In the latter half of World War II, Horton rose through the ranks to become the Commander-in-Chief of the Western Approaches.
