San Giuseppe da Copertino, also known as Saint Joseph of Copertino, is depicted in this 17th-century image as he performs the miraculous act of levitation during Mass. Born in the southern Italian town of Copertino in 1603, Giuseppe was known for his intense devotion to the Eucharist and deep spirituality from an early age. He joined the Franciscan Order in 1621 and was ordained a priest in 1631. The incident of his levitation during Mass is believed to have occurred on January 18, 1660, when he was celebrating Mass at the Church of Santa Maria della Misericordia in Copertino. Witnesses reported seeing the saint levitated several inches above the altar, suspended in mid-air, as he continued to recite the Mass. This extraordinary event was witnessed by numerous people, including local authorities and members of the clergy, who were both astounded and moved by the sight. The miraculous levitation of San Giuseppe da Copertino is a testament to the deep spiritual connection he had with God and the profound faith of the people of Copertino. The incident is documented in numerous historical records and has been the subject of numerous artistic depictions, including this stunning print from the Mary Evans Picture Library. San Giuseppe da Copertino continued to perform other miracles throughout his life, including the ability to read minds and heal the sick. He died on September 18, 1663, and was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1767. Today, he is venerated as the patron saint of aviators, astronauts, and those suffering from nervous or mental disorders.
