EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the regal presence of King Leopold II of Belgium, taken in the year 1909, during the twilight of his reign. Born on December 16, 1835, Leopold was the fifth child and third son of King Leopold I of Belgium and Queen Louise of Orléans. He ascended to the throne following his father's death in 1865, at the young age of 31. Leopold II is perhaps best known for his controversial rule in the Congo Free State, a vast territory in Central Africa that he personally governed as its sovereign from 1885 until 1908. His exploitation of the region's natural resources, particularly rubber, led to widespread atrocities and the infamous Congo Crisis. The King's actions have been a subject of intense debate and criticism, with some historians condemning his brutal methods and others defending his role in bringing modern infrastructure to the region. Despite the controversy surrounding his rule in the Congo, Leopold II is also remembered for his efforts to modernize Belgium and promote its industrial growth. He oversaw the expansion of the port of Antwerp, which became a major European hub for trade and commerce. Leopold II's reign ended in 1909, and he died on December 17, 1909, at the age of 74. This photograph of Leopold II, taken in his later years, shows a man who appears both resolute and weary. His piercing gaze and impeccably groomed beard and mustache convey a sense of determination and authority, while the deep lines on his face suggest the weight of the many challenges he faced during his long and complex reign. The photograph is a poignant reminder of a controversial and enigmatic figure in Belgian and world history.
