EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the historic moment when Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians, married his second wife, Louise d'Orléans, in 1832. The daughter of King Louis-Philippe of France, Louise brought a sense of elegance and refinement to the Belgian court. Leopold, who had been a widower since the death of his first wife, Charlotte of Belgium in 1816, was in his late sixties when he married Louise, who was just twenty-two years old. Despite the age difference, the couple shared a deep connection and went on to have five children together. The wedding ceremony took place in the Royal Palace of Brussels, in the presence of numerous European dignitaries and diplomats. The grand event was a symbol of the growing recognition of Belgium as an independent nation, having gained its independence from the Netherlands only a few years earlier. The image shows Leopold and Louise standing before the altar, with the Archbishop of Mechelen officiating the ceremony. The newlyweds are surrounded by their attendants, including the Duke of Wellington, who served as the best man. The intricate details of their wedding attire, from the rich fabrics to the ornate jewelry, are a testament to the opulence of the time. This photograph is a precious reminder of a significant moment in Belgian history, when the country's first king cemented his position on the throne with the marriage of a young and vibrant queen. The image also highlights the close ties between Belgium and France, as well as the European political landscape of the time.
