EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, taken in 1819, showcases a group of Englishmen at a riding school in the Strand, London, as they learn to ride Johnson's Pedestrian Hobby Horse. The hobby horse, based on the Draisine or Draisienne, was a popular form of leisure activity and transportation during the early 19th century. The Draisine, invented by Karl Drais in Germany in 1817, was the precursor to the modern bicycle. It consisted of a wooden frame with two in-line wheels, a steerable front wheel, and a seat for the rider. The rider propelled the machine forward by pushing off the ground with their feet, making it an early form of human-powered transportation. In this photograph, the Englishmen are seen in various stages of learning to ride the hobby horse. Some are holding onto the frame for support, while others have their feet off the ground, trying to maintain their balance. The instructor, dressed in a top hat and tailcoat, watches over the students, providing guidance and encouragement. The riding school setting adds an element of formal training to this leisure activity, suggesting that even in its early days, cycling was seen as a skill worth learning. The hobby horse provided a sense of excitement and adventure, allowing people to experience the thrill of riding without the need for a real horse. This photograph is an intriguing glimpse into the history of cycling and the role that the hobby horse played in the development of this popular mode of transportation. It also highlights the importance of leisure activities in people's lives, even in the early 19th century, and the enduring appeal of learning new skills.
