EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Gerald David Lascelles, the 6th Earl of Harewood and younger brother of Queen Elizabeth II, is seen beaming with joy as he exits the hallowed grounds of St. Margaret's Church, Westminster, following his wedding to Angela Dowding on the 14th of May, 1952. The picturesque scene captures the essence of a royal wedding, with the newlyweds surrounded by a sea of elegantly dressed guests, including the bridesmaids, adorned in their white dresses and flower crowns. The wedding took place just a few days after the Queen's own wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, which had taken place on the 20th of November, 1947. The union between Gerald and Angela, who were both in their mid-twenties at the time, marked the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the young royals. St. Margaret's Church, located within the grounds of Westminster Abbey, has a rich history, having been the site of numerous royal weddings and baptisms, including that of Queen Elizabeth II herself. The church's beautiful architecture and serene surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for this timeless moment in history. Gerald Lascelles, who was born on the 15th of May, 1924, went on to have a distinguished military career and served as the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire from 1990 until 1999. Angela Dowding, who was born on the 18th of July, 1928, was a talented artist and designer, and the couple went on to have three children together. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the personal lives of the British royal family, capturing the joy and excitement of a royal wedding and the beginning of a new family legacy.
