1897 1965 Lascelles Viscountess

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white portrait captures the youthful beauty and poised elegance of Princess Mary, later Viscountess Lascelles, as she gazes off into the distance with a thoughtful expression. The photograph, taken in 1897 when Mary was just 23 years old, offers a glimpse into the life of one of the most intriguing figures in British royal history. Born on May 26, 1867, Mary was the eldest daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. As such, she was third in line to the throne, making her one of the most prominent members of the royal family during the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras. Despite her privileged upbringing, Mary was known for her down-to-earth nature and her commitment to charitable work. She was particularly passionate about nursing, and during World War I, she served as a nurse and later became the President of the British Red Cross and Order of St. John. In 1893, Mary married the 6th Earl of Lascelles, later becoming the Countess of Lascelles. The couple went on to have three children together. The marriage was not a happy one, however, and Mary and her husband eventually separated in 1923. Despite her personal struggles, Mary continued to dedicate herself to her charitable work and her role as a member of the royal family. She was a constant presence at state functions and public engagements, and her warm and approachable demeanor endeared her to the British people. This striking portrait, taken in 1897, captures Mary at a pivotal moment in her life, just before she embarked on her marriage and her role as a royal wife and mother. With her elegant profile and thoughtful expression, she embodies the grace and poise of a young woman on the cusp of adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it.
