Large Minoan Strage Jar - Pithoi

The excavations of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos revealed a remarkable set of large Minoan storage jars, or pithoi. The compartments in the floor were for grain and produce. An alternative explanation for these compartments is that they were catch basins for the contents of the pithoi if one should break or leak. It would be very hazardous to store grain or produce in the floor of a magazine, the main purpose of which was to hold giant vases of liquids. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a remarkable discovery from the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos, Crete, during the 1910s. The image reveals a set of large Minoan storage jars, or pithoi, uncovered in the ancient palace complex. The intricately decorated jars, some reaching impressive sizes, were a significant find in the archaeological world, shedding light on the advanced civilization of the Minoans. The floor of this magazine, or storage room, was uniquely designed with compartments. While some believe these compartments were used for grain and produce storage, an alternative theory suggests they served as catch basins for the contents of the pithoi in case of leakage or breakage. However, it is more plausible that the floor compartments were intended for grain storage, as the main function of a magazine was to hold giant vases of liquids. The Minoan civilization, known for its advanced architectural and artistic achievements, thrived on the island of Crete between 2600 and 1450 BC. The discovery of these pithoi at Knossos, along with other artifacts, has provided valuable insights into the daily life and culture of the Minoans. The decorative motifs and intricate designs on the jars showcase the artistic prowess of this ancient civilization, making them a testament to the rich history of Greece.
