Lanius Erythropterus, Himalayan Shrike-babbler. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains

Lanius Erythropterus, Himalayan Shrike-babbler. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of the Lanius Erythropterus, also known as the Himalayan Shrike-babbler. Captured in an engraving dating back to 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this image transports us to the majestic Himalaya Mountains where these birds call home. John Gould, renowned for his taxidermy skills and nicknamed "the bird-stuffer" developed a deep fascination with avian species from the east during the late 1820s. This passion was ignited when a collection of Himalayan mountain birds arrived at the Zoological Society's museum. Inspired by their magnificence, Gould conceived an idea to publish a volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty different species, including figures of one hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. She meticulously made drawings of each bird and transferred them onto large lithographic stones. These exceptional works became known as "Gould plates" and are treasured for their remarkable detail and vibrant colors. This particular print captures not only the striking appearance of the Lanius Erythropterus but also provides insight into its behavior and markings. The artist's skillful rendering brings out every intricate feature, making it feel like we could reach out and touch this exotic creature. As we admire this early 19th-century illustration from English artists Elizabeth and John Gould, we are reminded of their significant contributions to natural history through their stunning depictions of animals. Their work continues to inspire awe even centuries later at Liszt Cultural Institute's Arkheia collection.
