EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of determination and resilience among the Land Army recruits of 1941. Ava and Blanche Horn, two former mill workers and sisters from the industrial heartlands of the North, are seen here in their new uniforms as they make their way to the south of England to join the Land Army. Known as the "first Bevin Girls," these women volunteered or were conscripted to work on farms and in other rural areas to help alleviate labor shortages caused by World War II. The sisters are dressed in their distinctive Land Army uniforms, which included jodhpurs, corduroy skirts, collared shirts, ties, and caps. Their mill worker backgrounds are evident in their worn-in shoes and the cord and collar detailing on their uniforms. The photograph was taken in London, likely at a train station or bus stop, as the sisters prepared to embark on their journey to their new posts. The Land Army played a crucial role in the war effort, with over 80,000 women serving by 1943. Their work was varied, from planting and harvesting crops to caring for livestock and performing other essential farm tasks. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and contributions made by ordinary women during wartime, and the ways in which they adapted to new roles and challenges. The photograph is part of the extensive collection of historical images held by Mary Evans Picture Library, and provides a valuable insight into the experiences of women during World War II. It is a powerful reminder of the enduring strength and adaptability of the human spirit, and the ways in which ordinary people can make a significant impact on history.
