EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Lambeth Workhouse Schools in West Norwood, London, as they appeared in 1905. At the time, the parish of Lambeth operated a workhouse on Elder Road, providing shelter, food, and education for the destitute, the elderly, and the infirm. The workhouse system, established in the late 16th century, aimed to provide a deterrent to idleness and to encourage the able-bodied poor to seek employment. The New School buildings shown here were erected in 1885 as an extension to the existing workhouse complex. Designed to accommodate the growing number of children in need of education, these buildings were a testament to the evolving social attitudes towards the welfare of the poor. The children, dressed in their uniforms, are seen playing and studying in the courtyard, surrounded by the imposing red-brick walls of the workhouse. The Lambeth Workhouse Schools were a crucial part of the social fabric of the time, providing not only education but also a sense of community and structure for the children who attended. The children, many of whom were orphans or had been separated from their families due to poverty, were given a chance to learn essential skills and knowledge that would help them to secure a better future. Despite the stigma attached to the workhouse system, these institutions played an important role in the lives of countless individuals and families during a time of great social and economic upheaval. This photograph offers a poignant glimpse into the past, providing a valuable insight into the lives of the children who attended the Lambeth Workhouse Schools and the community that cared for them.
