Lady and Mirror by George Ranstead
A rather arrogant lady, wearing a fashionable ensemble, gazing at her reflection in a large oval mirror, except, spookily, no reflection appears to be forthcoming. Postcard hand drawn by George Ranstead, an amateur soldier artist of the Great War who served in the Army Pay Corps. Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hauntingly beautiful postcard by George Ranstead, a fashionable lady, adorned in the latest trends of the early 20th century, stands before a large oval mirror. Her expression is one of arrogant vanity as she gazes intently into the looking glass, expecting to see her reflection perfectly captured. Yet, the mirror remains unyielding, reflecting nothing but the empty space around it. The eerie absence of a reflection adds an intriguing layer of mystery to the scene. Ranstead, an amateur soldier artist of the Great War, served in the Army Pay Corps. During his time in the military, he turned to drawing as a means of escape from the harsh realities of war. His work reflects the influence of the illustrated magazines of the period, showcasing a range of subjects from wartime humor to images of pretty girls. This postcard, created circa 1916, captures the essence of the vanity and beauty ideals of the time, while also adding a touch of the supernatural. The lady's fashionable attire and the ornate mirror frame add to the overall allure of the image, making it a captivating piece of art from a bygone era.
