EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts a pivotal moment in the tumultuous history of 15th-century France, known as the Praguerie, or the Pragmatic Conspiracy. The Dauphin, the future King Louis XI, is shown in deep conversation with other discontented nobles, their faces shrouded in shadows, as they hatch a plan to dethrone the reigning monarch, Charles VII. The allusion to the Hussite uprising in Prague underscores the discontent and unrest brewing in the French court. The Praguerie, which took place between 1440 and 1443, was a significant challenge to Charles VII's authority. The Dauphin, who had been exiled since his father's death in 1422, saw an opportunity to seize the throne for himself. He allied himself with various disgruntled nobles, including the Duke of Burgundy, to overthrow the king. The conspiracy was a dangerous game, with the potential to plunge France into chaos and civil war. The Hussite uprising in Bohemia, which had begun in 1419, served as a cautionary tale of the destructive power of rebellion. Yet, the nobles were driven by their own grievances, including their desire for greater political power and influence. Despite the risks, the conspirators pressed on, hoping to capitalize on Charles VII's weaknesses and vulnerabilities. However, the conspiracy was ultimately unsuccessful, and the Dauphin was forced to abandon his plans and submit to the king. The Praguerie marked the end of the Armagnac-Burgundian civil war and the beginning of a new era in French history. This print captures the intrigue and tension of the Praguerie, a moment when the future of France hung in the balance. The shadowy figures of the conspirators, their faces obscured, add an air of mystery and suspense to the scene, making it a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in French history.
