EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, King George VI is seen engaging in a warm conversation with the Hon. Margaret Elphinstone during the wedding reception of Lord and Lady Elphinstone's younger son, the Hon. Andrew Elphinstone, at St. Margaret's, Westminster on the 12th of June, 1946. The King, who reigned from 1936 until his death in 1952, is dressed in a formal morning suit, while Margaret, wearing a stylish hat and elegant dress, looks intently at him. Margaret Elphinstone, who was born on the 7th of July, 1921, was a close friend and confidante of Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen. She had been one of the Princess' bridesmaids at her wedding to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on the 9th of November, 1947. But in this photograph, taken a year earlier, she is seen in a different role, as the proud sister of the groom, Lord Elphinstone. The wedding of the Hon. Andrew Elphinstone to the Hon. Mrs. Vicary Gibbs, one of Princess Elizabeth's ladies-in-waiting, was an important social event in the post-war period. The image captures a moment of intimacy and connection between the King and one of the young women in his extended royal family, a testament to the personal relationships that existed within the monarchy during this time. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the human side of the monarchy, and the personal connections that bind its members together. It is also a fascinating glimpse into the history of the royal family during a period of transition and change, as the world adjusted to the post-war era and looked forward to a new reign.
