EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the majesty and power of HMHS (His Majesty's Hospital Ship) "Sussex," a warship of the Royal Navy from the early 20th century. Commissioned in 1911, the "Sussex" was one of the most advanced hospital ships of her time, designed to provide essential medical support to the British Navy during wartime. King George V himself laid the ship's keel in 1910, marking the beginning of her construction at the John Brown & Company shipyard in Clydebank, Scotland. The "Sussex" was a steam-powered vessel, measuring 512 feet in length and capable of carrying up to 1,000 beds for wounded soldiers. She was equipped with the latest medical facilities, including an operating theatre, X-ray room, and laboratory, making her a vital asset to the navy's medical services. The "Sussex" saw active service during World War I, transporting wounded soldiers from the battlefields of Europe to hospitals in England. She was also used to evacuate civilians from areas under attack, demonstrating her versatility and humanitarian role. This photograph, taken in the early 1910s, shows the "Sussex" in all her glory as she sailed the seas, a symbol of the Royal Navy's commitment to protecting and caring for its personnel. The "Sussex" continued to serve in the Royal Navy until 1922, when she was sold for scrap. Today, she remains an important part of maritime and military history, a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Royal Navy during a time of war. This photograph is a rare and precious reminder of a bygone era, a time when steam-powered warships ruled the waves and the Royal Navy was at the forefront of medical innovation.
