Aylmer Baghdad Faisal Haldane Iraq Mahmud Mesopotamia Percy Serai Throne Feisal

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, King Faisal I of Iraq (1885-1933) is seen being crowned at the Great Court of Serai in Baghdad on August 23, 1921. Surrounded by a grand assembly of dignitaries and officials, Faisal sits confidently on his new throne, wearing the traditional Iraqi headdress, the agal, and holding the sword of Omar al-Farouq. To his right stands Sir Percy Cox (1864-1937), the British High Commissioner in Mesopotamia, who played a crucial role in the selection and installation of Faisal as the first monarch of the newly-established Iraqi state. Wearing his military uniform, Cox holds a scroll bearing the text of the oath of allegiance that Faisal is about to take. To Faisal's left is Sir Aylmer Haldane (1868-1936), the British military officer who had led the military campaign that had brought the Ottoman forces in Mesopotamia to their knees in 1917. Wearing a suit and holding a sword, Haldane represents the military might that had paved the way for the creation of the new Iraqi state. To Faisal's far left is Sayid Mahmud Pasha (1870-1925), the last Ottoman governor of Baghdad, who had been deposed by the British in 1917. He is seen here in traditional Ottoman attire, symbolizing the end of the Ottoman era in Mesopotamia and the beginning of a new chapter in Iraqi history. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Iraq, as Faisal takes his place as the first king of the newly-independent state, with the support of the British and under the watchful eyes of the Ottoman and British dignitaries. The image underscores the complex web of political alliances and power dynamics that shaped the modern Middle East in the aftermath of World War I.
