EDITORS COMMENTS
King Ethelred II the Unready (978-1016 AD), also known as Ethelred the Ill-Counseled or Ethelred the Unready, was the King of England during one of the most turbulent periods in English history. This evocative portrait depicts Ethelred in profile, wearing a richly decorated crown and a flowing cloak, with an expression of deep concentration or contemplation. The image, which dates back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into the regal presence of a monarch who ruled during a time of great upheaval. Ethelred's reign was marked by the Danish invasions, which began in the late 9th century and continued into the 11th. The attacks, which were led by various Danish chieftains, caused widespread destruction and devastation throughout England. Ethelred's nickname, "the Unready," is believed to have been given to him by the Danes, who mocked his inability to defend his kingdom effectively. Despite his military weaknesses, Ethelred was a skilled diplomat and a devout Christian. He is said to have built numerous churches and monasteries throughout England, and he was known for his generous patronage of the arts and learning. In 1014, Ethelred was driven into exile in Normandy, but he was able to return to England in 1015 and regain his throne. He was killed in battle in 1016, during the final Danish invasion led by Canute the Great. This historic print, which captures the enigmatic and complex character of King Ethelred II, is a valuable reminder of the rich and complex history of England during the Middle Ages. The image, with its intricate details and striking composition, invites us to reflect on the challenges and triumphs of a monarch who ruled during a time of great turmoil and uncertainty.
