1198 1214 1249 Alexander Ermine Reigned Scot Land Scots

EDITORS COMMENTS
King Alexander II of Scotland, also known as Alexander the Grasper or the Steward, ruled Scotland from 1214 to 1249. Born in 1198, Alexander was the eldest son of King William the Lion and Ermengarde of Narbonne. He ascended to the throne at the age of 16 following his father's death. This striking image depicts King Alexander II in regal attire, wearing a fur-lined ermine hat, signifying his royal status. The ermine, a symbol of purity and power, was a common element in the clothing of Scottish monarchs. Alexander's fur-trimmed robe adds to his majestic appearance. During his reign, Alexander faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with England and Wales, as well as internal rebellions. He is best known for his efforts to strengthen the Scottish monarchy and centralize power. In 1230, he issued the "Constitutions of Meigle," which established a system of royal justiciars to administer justice throughout Scotland. Alexander's reign also saw the expansion of Scottish territories, including the acquisition of the Western Isles and the lands of Galloway. He was married twice, first to Joan, the daughter of King John of England, and later to Yolande de Dreux, with whom he had several children. Despite his accomplishments, Alexander's reign was marked by political instability and conflict. He was killed in 1249 during a battle against the English near Newcastle upon Tyne. His death marked the beginning of a period of turmoil in Scottish history, known as the "Minority," during which Scotland was ruled by various regents on behalf of Alexander's young son, Alexander III. This photograph print offers a glimpse into the rich history of Scotland and the regal presence of its monarchs. King Alexander II's image, with his fur-trimmed hat and ermine robe, serves as a reminder of the power and majesty of the Scottish monarchy during the Middle Ages.
