September 1898: The Defeated Khalifa Fleeing the Battlefield of Omdurman This powerful and evocative image captures the moment of defeat for Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, also known as the Khalifa of the Mahdist State in Sudan. The Battle of Omdurman, fought on September 2, 1898, marked the culmination of the Mahdist War and the end of Sudanese resistance against British colonial rule. In this photograph, taken after the battle, the Khalifa is seen in the distance, surrounded by his loyal followers, as they make their desperate escape from the battlefield. The sun sets in the background, casting long shadows over the desolate landscape. The defeated army, having lost thousands of men, is shown in disarray, with some attempting to flee on foot, while others try to mount their horses and camels. The Mahdist army, led by the charismatic and visionary religious leader Muhammad Ahmad, had captured Khartoum in 1885 and declared the establishment of a new Islamic state. However, the British, under the command of General Horatio Kitchener, had been planning a counter-offensive for several years. The Battle of Omdurman was the final confrontation between the two forces, and the outcome was a decisive victory for the British. The Khalifa, who had been wounded during the battle, managed to escape with a small group of followers, but he was eventually captured and executed in 1899. The defeat of the Mahdist State marked the end of Sudanese resistance against British colonial rule and paved the way for the establishment of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the historical significance of the Battle of Omdurman and the impact it had on the people of Sudan and the wider world. It is a testament to the courage and determination of those who fought, and a reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of Africa and its people.
