EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness a significant moment in the history of English literature as the crowd gathers to pay tribute to the life and work of the renowned Romantic poet, John Keats. The scene takes place at the Protestant Cemetery in Rome, where Keats is buried, on February 15, 1821. The memorial tablet, which is being unveiled in this photograph, was erected to honor the poet's memory. Keats, who died at the young age of 25, is shown standing proudly before the crowd, his hand raised to reveal the tablet affixed to the pyramid-shaped tomb. His grave, marked by a simple cross, lies at the foot of the pyramid, surrounded by the lush greenery of the cemetery. The atmosphere is one of solemn reverence, with the crowd of mourners and onlookers dressed in their finest attire, many of the women holding parasols to shield themselves from the sun. The church in the background adds to the sense of history and tradition, as does the grandeur of the pyramid tomb, which stands out against the backdrop of the cemetery. This poignant moment in history took place 126 years after Keats' birth, in 1795, and 19 years after his untimely death. The memorial tablet, which bears the inscription "This stone to mark where lies / One whose name was writ in water," serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the enduring power of poetry. The image captures the essence of a bygone era, transporting us back in time to a moment of collective mourning and celebration of the life and work of a literary genius. The memorial tablet, which remains a popular tourist attraction to this day, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of John Keats and his place in the annals of English literature.
