Kalendar Dervish & Dervish

Kalendar Dervishes & Dervish. A Kalendar Dervish is of the Kalendari, who are a loosely knit order of wandering Dervishes who stretch throughout the Middle East. Dervish or Darvesh in Persian usually refers to a person who is a seeker of the truth i.e. universal truth. Within the Islamic tradition such people are often known as Sufis, Sufi, people of the way or mystics and they come from every strata of society; here monetary considerations are inapplicable since the situation is that of a deep personal inner spiritual longing. There are in existence a number Sufi Orders many of which bear the name of a great saint and within these orders various practices have continued over the centuries in order to assist generations of seekers whose desire is to be brought to reality itself. It is said that the number of ways to reality/truth exceeds the number of grains of sand on the beach. It may be noted that this infinite number of ways to truth can even start at a point beyond religion, ultimately the truth is an univeral quality."

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Kalendar Dervishes in Devotion: A Glimpse into the Infinite Paths to Truth 2. Description: This evocative image captures the essence of the Kalendar Dervishes, a loosely connected order of wandering Sufis, or seekers of truth, who span the Middle East. The term "Dervish" or "Darvesh" in Persian signifies an individual driven by an insatiable inner spiritual yearning, transcending societal and monetary boundaries. Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, encompasses these individuals, who come from all walks of life. The Kalendar Dervishes are but one of the many Sufi Orders that have persisted throughout history, each with unique practices designed to guide seekers on their paths to self-realization. The infinite quest for truth is a central tenet of Sufism, with the belief that the number of ways to reach this truth surpasses the number of grains of sand on the beach. This profound concept transcends religious boundaries, as the universal truth is seen as an inherent quality that can be accessed beyond the realm of organized religion. In this photograph, we witness two Kalendar Dervishes in the throes of their devotional dance, or "Sama," a practice that aims to induce spiritual ecstasy and union with the divine. The swirling motion of their cloaks and the trance-like state of their expressions serve as a powerful reminder of the infinite and diverse paths to the ultimate truth. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported to a realm where the boundaries between the self and the divine dissolve, and we are reminded of the boundless potential for spiritual growth and transformation that lies within each of us.
