EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (1859-1941) in a rare moment of domesticity with his second wife, Princess Hermine Reuss of Greiz (1887-1947), in the year 1930. The image, taken when Wilhelm was in his late 70s and Hermine in her 40s, offers a poignant contrast to the imperial grandeur and military might that defined Wilhelm's earlier reign. Wilhelm, who ascended to the throne in 1888 following the death of his father, Emperor Frederick III, was known for his controversial and unpredictable behavior. His first marriage to Crown Princess Victoria of Prussia ended in divorce in 1901, and he was later involved in a scandalous love affair with the actress Dolly von Schlebrügge. In 1905, Wilhelm married Hermine, the widowed Duchess of Saxe-Meiningen, in a secret ceremony. The couple had no children together. Despite the political turmoil and personal scandals that marked Wilhelm's reign, this photograph reveals a tender and intimate side of the Kaiser and his wife. The couple is shown sitting together on a bench in a garden, with Hermine resting her hand on Wilhelm's knee. The serene expression on both their faces suggests a deep connection and contentment. The photograph was likely taken during one of Wilhelm's visits to his wife's ancestral home, Greiz Castle, in Thuringia, Germany. The image offers a rare glimpse into the private lives of two historical figures who played significant roles in shaping the course of German history. This photograph, with its poignant depiction of love and companionship, serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and contradictions of the human experience, even amidst the grand sweep of history.
