EDITORS COMMENTS
Stephen of Blois, also known as King Stephen of England, is depicted in this striking print with an air of regal authority. Born around 1097, Stephen was the Count of Boulogne and the Duke of Normandy before ascending to the English throne in 1135 following the death of King Henry I. His reign, which lasted until 1154, was marked by instability and conflict. Stephen's profile is shown here, with a crown atop his head signifying his royal status. The intricate design of the crown, with its arches and fleur-de-lis, adds to the grandeur of the image. Stephen's piercing gaze and strong jawline convey a sense of determination and strength, fitting for a monarch who faced numerous challenges during his reign. Stephen's time on the English throne was marred by the Anarchy, a civil war that lasted from 1135 to 1153. The conflict arose due to a dispute over the succession following Henry I's death, with Stephen's cousin, Empress Matilda, also laying claim to the throne. The Anarchy resulted in widespread destruction and chaos, and it was only with the intervention of the future Henry II of England that the conflict was eventually brought to an end. Despite the turmoil of his reign, Stephen is remembered for his efforts to maintain the unity of the English church and his patronage of monasteries. This print serves as a poignant reminder of a complex and fascinating period in English history, and the enigmatic figure of King Stephen who ruled during it.
