EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the renowned French historian, Jules Michelet, in a rare moment of relaxation with his beloved wife, Collette, in the year 1874. The image, taken during Michelet's later years, presents an endearing contrast to the intense and passionate historian who dedicated his life to the study and preservation of French history. Born in 1798 in Rouen, Normandy, Michelet's fascination with history began at an early age. He rose to prominence in the 1830s and 1840s with his groundbreaking works on the history of France, including "History of France" and "The People of France." Michelet's innovative approach to historical research focused on the social, cultural, and spiritual aspects of history, rather than the traditional military and political narratives. Despite his immense success, Michelet's personal life was marked by tragedy and hardship. He was married twice, and both marriages ended in widowhood. His third marriage, to the much younger Collette, brought him happiness and companionship in his later years. In this photograph, Michelet, dressed in a formal suit, sits in an armchair with a gentle smile on his face, while Collette, wearing a flowing dress and holding a book, sits at his side. The warm, natural light illuminates their faces, creating a sense of tranquility and contentment. The image offers a rare glimpse into the personal life of one of France's most celebrated historians, revealing a man who, even in old age, remained deeply engaged with the written word and the love of his life.
