EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, showcases the enigmatic French artist Jules Chéret (1836-1932) in his later years, around 1932. Known as the "father of the modern poster," Chéret revolutionized the advertising industry with his innovative use of color lithography and dynamic compositions. His distinctive style, characterized by elegant curves and flowing lines, brought a new level of sophistication to the mass-produced poster. Born in 1836 in Amiens, France, Chéret began his artistic career as a lithographer, but it was his transition to poster design that would make him a legend. In the late 1860s, he opened his own atelier in Paris, where he produced posters for various theaters, cabarets, and circuses. His most famous works, such as "The Kiss" and "The Rendezvous," are considered masterpieces of the genre and continue to inspire artists and designers today. Despite his success, Chéret's career was not without challenges. He faced fierce competition from other poster designers and struggled financially, leading him to experiment with different techniques and formats. In the early 1900s, he even opened a popular cabaret, Le Chat Noir, which became a hub for Parisian artists and intellectuals. This photograph captures Chéret in his later years, looking thoughtful and introspective, with a hint of the mischievousness that characterized his earlier work. The image serves as a testament to his enduring influence on the world of art and design, and a reminder of the power of creativity and innovation.
