1847 1897 Bassano Chard Drift Moustache Notably Rorkes Rouse

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the distinguished visage of Lieutenant-Colonel John Rouse Merriott Chard, V.C., a British military officer renowned for his heroic actions during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Chard, born in 1847, served in the Royal Engineers and played a pivotal role in the defense of Rorke's Drift, a mission station and military outpost in Natal, South Africa. In this image, taken in 1897, Chard is depicted in a dark jacket and wearing a moustache, the lines on his face etched with the weight of experience. The historical significance of this photograph lies in the fact that Chard's leadership and determination during the Battle of Rorke's Drift helped repel a massive Zulu attack, resulting in one of the most famous victories in British military history. The battle took place on January 22, 1879, and the defenders held out against the enemy for 12 hours, despite being vastly outnumbered. Chard's military career began in 1864 when he joined the Royal Engineers, and he served in various capacities in India, Malta, and Egypt before being sent to South Africa. His actions at Rorke's Drift earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British military. After the war, Chard continued to serve in the military, eventually retiring as a Lieutenant-General in 1900. This photograph is a testament to Chard's military prowess and his place in history as a hero of the Anglo-Zulu War. It serves as a reminder of the courage and determination displayed by soldiers in the face of adversity and the importance of leadership in times of crisis.
